In 1940, author John Steinbeck and biologist Ed Ricketts embarked on an expedition to explore the intertidal marine life of the Gulf of California - also known as the Sea of Cortez – a voyage later detailed in Steinbeck’s book, Sea of Cortez: a leisurely journal of travel and research. In 2004, a group of marine scientists, journalists, and writers, using Sea of Cortez as a guide, attempted to retrace Steinbeck and Ricketts’ path to observe the changes that have occurred in the Gulf in the intervening six decades. In this episode of Beyond the Frontier, Rafe Sagarin, lead author of a paper published in the September issue of Frontiers entitled, “Remembering the Gulf: changes to the marine communities of the Sea of Cortez since the Steinbeck and Ricketts expedition of 1940”, discusses how the Gulf has changed since the time of Steinbeck and Ricketts.
